The sash is the interior framing that can be moved vertically either up or down in windows that open. This article will teach you how to perform easy repairs to your sash.

Weather Stripping

Wooden window sashes can give a classic look to your home. They are also durable and last for a long time if they are properly maintained. They may, however, get damaged or deteriorated over time due to exposure and normal wear. Fortunately, sash repair specialists can bring your windows back to their original condition and keep them looking fantastic for much longer than newer replacement windows.

The first step for sash window repairs is addressing weather stripping. It's found on both the sash and frame. If it's damaged or worn out, it can lead to drafts and other issues. Start by identifying the window brand and the date of manufacture for the glass (etched on the glass's corner or the aluminum spacers between panes). Take the sash off and mark its width and height so that you can get replacement weather stripping that matches.

Then, take it off and set it on a table so you can access all four sides. After you have removed the sash using the utility knife, you can remove the weather stripping that was left by hand or with a putty blade.

After removing the parting stop and cutting it to length and then apply a thin layer of glazing compound on the bottom of the sash. This coating will protect the putty and give your sash a fresh look.

Sash Hardware

It's important to know that replacing or repair of this hardware is typically simple and inexpensive. If you're having difficulty opening a sash, spray some oil into the jamb channel. It is important to have the tools you need before you start. Mark the location of the hinge channel on the frame (Photo 1) with pencil. This will allow you to position the channel in the proper place when you are finished. Remove the sash, and then remove the hardware, including the parting beads (Photo 2) and the cords or chains which hold it in place. Soften any putty that has been hardened with an electric heat gun set to medium and equipped with a shield for the nozzle. Remove the old sash and keep it in a bag with a label.

Sash Weights

Sash weights can be replaced to improve the performance of your window sash and reduce the energy cost. Sash weights are heavy lead or iron cylinders, which are enclosed inside a hidden compartment and linked to the moveable the sash with a rope. These weights function as counterbalances, which allows you to open and close the upvc window repair without requiring mechanical or electrical devices. The sash-weights are typically neglected or ignored by homeowners, and are turned into scrap when they break; therefore you might need to locate replacements.

The first step in replacing sash cords is to locate and take out the access panels located in the jambs. They are typically installed by screws or nails and will need to be removed or repositioned. You could use a hammer and chisel to remove them, but it's always better to lay down dust sheets before starting any work.

After the access panel has been removed, you can begin working on the sash. Use a flat bar or chisel to pry the small partsing beads out of their grooves. They are usually wedged in or nailed, but they can be removed and it's worth your time. If the sash is in place, break the mortise and the tenon joints by using the help of a hammer and pin or screwdriver, and then take out the wood pegs on the components. The sash should be able to move around freely now, however it may need some lubrication in order to feel less stiff.

Take a measurement of the length of sash cord/chain required to reach the sash slot at the bottom from the pulley located at the top of the jamb. Cut the cord/chain, and then secure it in the step 6 above. You can use a hammer and nail or screws, but nails are less likely to cause damage.

Unless you've bought a kit that replaces the old counterbalance system, it's recommended to keep the original balancing weights in place. They are not expensive and are easy to install if you purchase them from architectural salvage stores. Based on the size and shape of your window, you might need to install one or two sashweights to keep it open.
